OLD BELGIUM

Synopsis

Antwerp, 1978.  The “Ancienne Belgique” concert hall presents a new revue every week. A long time ago Edith Piaf, Louis Armstrong and Josephine Baker attracted crowds. Now local artists perform musical acts, dance, sketches and conjurer’s acts. That’s entertainment on the banks of the river Scheldt.

But behind the scenes and in the dressing rooms, life is not always easy. Ambition and envy sometimes prevail as competition among the artists is fierce. This is all the more the case as one concert hall after another is compelled to close its doors for lack of audience. The main competitor is television. Not only does it keep audiences at home, but many artists and musicians are leaving the theatre to start working for television out of sheer necessity….
